Rotary seals are made from synthetic elastomers bonded to cases, which is usually metal or mild steel.
Rotary shaft seals are designed to withstand pressure up to 20 bars and temperature up to 260°C (depending on material and compound), making them an ideal solution under very varied conditions for applications such as:
It is naturally desirable for efficient sealing that the shaft should run dead true, but in practice, a certain amount of eccentricity must be accepted.
The main purpose of rotary seals is to retain bearing lubrication and prevent leakage.
However, special shaft seal types can improve efficiency, by reducing the chance of premature failure. Improvements can be made through:
For these purposes we recommend using a dust ring or V-ring which is designed for these improvements.
Remember, it is primarily brakes and shaft damage that causes seal leakage, which underlines the importance of proper installation.
Rotary seals have maximum sealing efficiency and the longest working life. However more exact lifetime depends on the temperature and the fluid used.
The local temperature in the sealing edge is the primary determining factor in the definitive lifetime of the lip seals. However, other factors also have an effect, including the:
A V-ring is a one-piece moulded sealing ring made from synthetic rubber. V-rings comprise of two parts: the main body and the flexible self-tensioning sealing lip. A V-ring can absorb large eccentricities and can seal a non-square counterface.
V-rings are mounted on, and rotate with, the shaft. The lip seals axially against a counter face, which is perpendicular to the shaft. The body has an interference fit on the shaft and holds the lip in position. This type of seal can be stretched out and fitted over a flange during installation, which is a valuable characteristic, especially in the case of repair. V-rings can operate at sliding velocities up to 8 m/s. At velocities above 8 up to 12 m/s, v-ring seals need to be axially located.
V-rings are normally made of nitrile rubber. For applications where higher temperatures occur or where aggressive media are present, V-rings made of fluorocarbon rubber should be used.
NBR -40 to +100°C
The standard material with good resistance to oil, grease, weak acids, alkalis, and many other fluids.
FPM (Viton ™) -30 to + 200°C
It is preferred for high-temperature applications and with more aggressive fluids.
CR, EPDM and HNBR materials are also available for specific applications, e.g. enhanced weather resistance. The materials are supplied per request.
Shaft seals (also called oil seals) offer an economical solution for sealing rotating shafts. Shaft seals prevent lubricant leakage and prevent external contamination across a range of applications:
PTFE seals consists of a variety of high-performance static and dynamic seals, designed for applications where high mechanic and chemical loads exceed the performance of traditional sealing materials.
PTFE seals can be supplied according to standard dimensions or adapted to existing housings without tooling cost.
PTFE seals are commonly used within chemical, food and drug, petrochemical, offshore and hydraulic industries.
HB Seals offer a wide range of industry standard Mechanical seal types. HB Seals also have extensive experience of providing equipment specific Mechanical Seal replacements for all major global pump manufacturers. HB Seals offers FDA specified compliant materials for seals used within the Food and Beverage industry.
The Gland Packing or Compression Packing are a popular way of solving dynamic sealing constructions in a mechanical equipment and are designed to meet all industrial sealing requirements.
This type of seal damps leakage between the moving part and the housing and is essential for the efficiency of mixers, pumps, valves, and other industrial equipment in rotary motion
Gland Packings is usually made from relatively soft, pliant materials that meets the following five main criteria for the selection of packing:
They seal all types of fluids including acids, steam, water, caustics, solvents, gases, oil, gasoline, and other chemicals over a broad range of temperature and pressure conditions. Gland packeings are used in rotary, centrifugal, and reciprocating pumps, valves, expansion joints, soot blowers,
and many other types of mechanical equipment.
HB Seals offers an extensive range of Gland Packing types with a vast variety of materials and constructions to suit a wide range of industry applications.
Even though they are relatively easy to install and maintain, to make installation easier and reduce maintenance time, we can also offer custom pre-formed Gland Packing rings to suit specific dimensional and application requirements.
